The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways  (MoRTH) has currently taken a step for the safety of people on the road. So, a new draft notification has been added by them in the list of compulsory safety equipment for all car variants. And according to the new draft notification,  Dual front airbags is mandatory for all car variants i.e. an airbag will also be also provided for the co-driver passenger seat.

Currently, a standard airbag is provided to the driver seat in a lower and mid-range budget car but the dual airbags are available in higher variants of some cars as it requires some extra charges. As we can see, presently the budget cars like S Presso, Alto 800, WagonR, Celerio, Datsun Redi go, Renault  Kwid, Hyundai Santro and Mahindra Bolero only providing a driver seat airbag but we can see the dual front airbags i.e. the co-driver seat airbag in their higher variants which require extra charges.

Yet the date is not confirmed when this new draft notification becomes law as the mandatory safety equipment of vehicles comes under Automotive Industry Standards (AIS). Last year (2019), they made a law i.e. they included the driver seat airbags as mandatory safety equipment in the car. But now MoRTH has now introduced new changes in it. This new changes in the law will come in action soon and then every car sold in also has a co-driver seat airbag.

The addition of this co-driver airbag leads to an increase in the price of the car nearly 5000-10,000 rupees. But this co-driver airbag helps in the safety of people from severe injuries or even from death as it increases the safety of car and people. Currently, the mandatory features that are available in cars are Electronic braking distribution, high-speed alerts, ABS, front seat belt reminders, Rear parking sensors and manual override for central locking.
